Why Is Electrical Safety Testing Done?
Understanding of what electrical safety testing is about and how to ensure your test results are meaningful. Electrical safety testing is essential to ensure safe operating standards for any product that uses electricity. Whether on an annual or bi-annual basis, electrical safety testing can play a major role in creating a safe environment not only for employees but customers as well.
Electrical safety testing is important and as fully qualified electricians we are able to offer homeowners peace of mind when it comes to the condition of their home electrics. Within the general category of electrical safety testing are a variety of equipment types that are specifically designed to test for electrical compliance. Electrical safety testing will help you manage the risk of electrocution, electrical shock, and fire in your workplace.Electrical safety testing is important to ensure safe operating standards for any medical product that is near patients and uses electricity.
Electrical Safety Testing
Electrical and electronic products and devices are essential to almost every aspect of daily life. These products help to make us more efficient and productive at work, and provide us with entertainment when we’re at home. However, electrical products can also expose users to risk of electrical shock, whether as a result of poor design, inadequate maintenance or unintended use. Indeed, electrical shock related to the use of electrical and electronic products is the cause of hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries worldwide each year.
What is electrical safety testing?
Testing electrical and electronic products for electrical safety is intended to identify the potential risk of electrical shock to users. Evaluating a product for electrical safety usually includes the following tests:
- High voltage test (dielectric withstand test) – measures the ability of an electrical product to withstand a high voltage applied between a product’s electrical circuit and ground.
- Leakage current test – evaluates whether current that flows between an AC source and ground does not exceed a specified limit.
- Insulation resistance test – calibrates the quality of the electrical insulation used.
- Ground continuity test – ensures that a clear path is available between all exposed metal surfaces and the power system ground. See more here.
Electrical safety test is the process of inspecting and testing electrical installations to ensure that they are safe and fit for purpose.
The Why, When, and How of Electrical Safety Testing
Electrical safety testing has been around for almost a century, and safety agencies have been testing and certifying products for almost as long. Electrical and electronic products have changed dramatically over the years, requiring the safety standards to evolve to accommodate the changes in technology.
Why Do We Need Electrical Safety Testing?
The obvious answer is consumer and operator protection from shock hazards. Shock hazards exist when a voltage and current are accessible to the operator with respect to earth ground.
According to OSHA’s Publication 3075, a shock hazard is considered to exist at an accessible part in a circuit between the part and ground or other accessible parts if the potential is more than 42.4 V peak and the current through a 1,500-Ω load is more than 5 mA.
Studies have concluded that the human body can feel the sensation of an electrical shock with as little as 1.0 mA of current. Since the human body is not a fixed resistance, the voltage required to produce 1.0 mA of current can vary greatly based on the minimum impedance of the human body under various conditions.
